The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to step back from senior roles in the royal family with the intention of financial self-sufficiency. The decision was announced on Wednesday evening and reportedly no one from Buckingham Palace had any idea about it.
Harry and Meghan focus on financial independence
Prince Harry and Meghan plan to support the Queen while working towards becoming fully independent. The official statement said that this came after months of internal discussion. “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen.”
They further added, “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
According to the report the full details will be disclosed in due course.
On the other hand, a spokesperson from the Palace mentioned, “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
The couple did not consult anyone from the family including the Queen or Prince Charles and their announcement came as a shocker to the member. None was aware of the release of such an official statement which caused kind of uneasiness and concern at the heart of the monarchy. Apparently the discussions between the monarch and Charles about the couple’s future role had only just begun when this news was made public by the celebrity couple.
