In a poignant showcase of resilience and self-acceptance, Xavian Wu, Hong Kong’s first high-profile transgender singer-songwriter, took the stage at the annual LGBTQ Pink Dot HK carnival on Sunday. Celebrating the festival’s 10th anniversary, Wu, who performs under the name SY, shared his deeply personal journey of self-discovery and transformation through music. With three songs reflecting his experiences, Wu aims to inspire and empower others in the LGBTQ community, emphasizing pride in identity amidst the challenges faced by transgender individuals in Hong Kong.

Embracing Identity Through Music

Xavian Wu, known as SY, is not just a singer-songwriter; he’s a beacon of hope for many in the LGBTQ community. At the Pink Dot HK carnival, Wu shared his journey of self-discovery, expressing how music has been a vital outlet for his emotions. “Many things happened in the past 10 years, including myself, from not knowing myself… to realizing I am a trans,” he recounted, emphasizing his commitment to authenticity and representation.

With three songs released since his debut in February, Wu aims to inspire others by sharing his experiences. “I am proud of my identity and have learned to embrace it. I don’t want to hide,” he declared, illustrating his determination to foster acceptance and understanding within the community through his art.

Navigating the Challenges of Transition

Wu’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. Although Hong Kong permits transgender individuals to change their gender on ID cards, stringent requirements complicate the process. Wu applied for a gender change in April and is currently awaiting approval from immigration, reflecting the bureaucratic hurdles that many transgender individuals face.

His transition began in earnest after a pivotal moment in 2017 when he learned about transgender experiences through a health program. Following medical advice, he started testosterone therapy in 2018 and underwent top surgery in Thailand in 2020, supported throughout by his mother. “After my surgery, I finally felt comfortable looking at myself in the mirror,” he shared, marking a significant turning point in his life.
