Keanu Reeves surprised everyone with his announcement that he’d be playing Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 during Microsoft’s Xbox E3 briefing earlier this year.
Surprise for Mike Pondsmith
Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk system found out that Keanu Reeves is all set to feature in Cyberpunk 2077 which was beyond his expectation.
“CDPR didn’t tell me who they’d got,” he told us at Gamescom this past week. “They said, ‘We have an actor.’ So I said, ‘Who have you got?’ And they said, ‘We can’t tell you, wait until you get to Warsaw.’”
When they were preparing for their next visit, Pondsmith asked his wife Lisa Pondsmith, who handles the business side of their company R. Talsorian Games that who CDPR had found to play the Silverhand. His wife took Keanu Reeves’ name which was unbelievable to him.
“And I said, nahh, that’s way below his paygrade, no way,” Mike recalled. “Besides, he’s never going to do Cyberpunk stuff again.”
Behind Story
Pondsmith further said that the developers were eager to reveal the name. Pondsmith shared he and Lisa checked out Reeves’ performance in motion capture and they were impressed.
“Keanu worked out really well because he got across the essential element of Johnny, which is that in the end, Johnny’s not a person you cross, and Johnny’s looking out for Johnny.”
Although Pondsmith didn’t get a chance to talk to Keanu Reeves about all things in person, it is expected Reeves would come up with another massive hit.
Pondsmith also thinks that the choice was right. “Sooner or later will fall into the trap that I have prepared for him.”
