Prince Philip, 99

Philip also remembered as the Duke of Edinburgh, died on Friday at Windsor Castle, aged 99, after spending 69 years by his wife’s side.

He will be given a ceremonial royal funeral, rather than a state funeral, with no open processions, held solely within the premises of Windsor Castle, and with a maximum of only 30 mourners. The funeral will be aired on television. The Queen has requested people who want to pay their respects in person to stay at home maintaining the coronavirus guidelines.

Flags at Buckingham Palace and government buildings throughout the United Kingdom were lowered to half-mast, and billboard operators replaced advertisements with a snapshot of the prince as a tribute. Philip, a Greek prince, married Elizabeth in 1947 and, five years later, while visiting Kenya, delivered the news of her father’s death, making her queen at the age of 25.

The Royal Family In Mourning

Philip, the pillar of support for the queen, has received tributes from all over the country and from world leaders. She is the world’s oldest and longest-reigning living monarch, at the age of 94.

Outside Gloucestershire residence, Highgrove, on Saturday, Prince Charles paid tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh and told reporters that his family was “deeply grateful” for the public’s kindness after his father’s passing.

A Death Gun Salute was fired by the armed forces at noon (1100 GMT) on Saturday to commemorate Philip’s passing. Guns were fired by artillery groups in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, and Gibraltar, as well as several navy warships.

The Queen has lost her strongest friend and confidant, the one person she could trust and who was unafraid to tell her what he thought. Philip would have turned 100 in June, and they had been together for 73 years.

A member of the royal family was asked how the queen was dealing with the incident, the members expressed that the family is in mourning.
