The English Football Association charged Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur with misconduct on Thursday, three months after he made a derogatory statement about South Koreans in response to a remark about his Tottenham Hotspur colleague Son Heung-min.
The comment that spurred allegations
When asked for a Tottenham player’s shirt during an appearance on a Uruguayan television program in June, Bentancur said, “Sonny’s?” He continued, saying that since “more or less they are all the same,” it might also be Son’s cousin. On Instagram, Bentancur expressed his regret to Son, calling it a “very bad joke” and promising to “never disrespect you or hurt you.”
Bentancur is accused of having “acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute,” according to the FA. The FA said that because it contained “reference to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin,” it constituted an aggravated infringement. Bentancur is still able to play, but he has until September 19 to respond. Son said his teammate had “made a mistake”.
