Did you know that Chris Evans initially rejected the opportunity of playing Captain America? Recently in Monday’s episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, the Avengers star shared the reason behind it.

The unusual strain

Following his success in the Fantastic Four films, Evans was apprehensive to shift acting from being his “hobby” to pursuing a sound career. And then it led to his consternation when he started dealing with his passion with a serious blow. The actor told, “When it becomes your job, weird egoic strings become attached and precautions and plans, and all of a sudden it starts to feel a bit heavier. And yeah, anxiety comes with that.” He admitted, it really intertwined his pastime as he inhibited the concern of reading people’s reactions from the internet which gave birth to ‘stress’ eventually.
Later on, when he appeared for the audition of What’s Your Number? with Anna Faris, he was told to be competing against John Krasinski but that The Office alum was simultaneously deployed in the run for Captain America. However, Evans grabbed the concert, fortunately.

Outplaying the spell

Then the actual twist surfaced in the scene as the team surprised him with the news update where he was told that Marvel thought to go in a different way, wanting him to appear for a test to qualify the role. At that time, he conceived the jolt as a lustful chance where he wanted to say a big no, so that it doesn’t ‘take control of’ of his life trickily.

Evans continued saying, “So, I called my team back and I said, ‘Listen, thank them very much but I think I’m going to say no thanks.'”
Yet, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige didn’t give up hope on him who invited Evans for a visit. Meanwhile, Evans went to the spot and acknowledged, “I left Marvel. ‘You know, I’ve said no to this a couple of times and I woke up feeling pretty good. I’m going to stick to my guns”. Yes, he simply made up his mind to prioritize his happiness over tempting opportunities.

Challenging the undue fear

And then? Feige offered the role to Evans without testing his capability who also gave the weekend to him in order to arrive at a decision. Utilizing the time, Evans “went to a few different therapists” who reverted saying that he made such decisions out of fear. “They said, ‘You can’t live life that way.'”

Lastly, accepting the truth Evans got convinced for the role which he attributed as the “best decision” in his lifetime.
