On September 7, 2024, legendary actor Dick Van Dyke made history once again by tying the record as the oldest Creative Arts Emmy winner at the age of 98. He took home the prestigious award for Outstanding Variety Special (pre-recorded) for his CBS special Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic. This milestone ties him with Norman Lear, who set the same record at age 98 in 2020.
The special, aired in December 2023, celebrated Van Dyke’s remarkable career with archival footage and live performances, honoring his legacy in entertainment. As he took the stage to accept his award, Van Dyke charmed the audience by showing off his signature dance moves, joking, “I’m 99 next month!” His youthful energy and enthusiasm drew applause from the crowd.
Celebrating a Lifetime of Laughter and Joy
While receiving the award, Van Dyke acknowledged his wife, Arlene Silver, who served as the special’s producer.
He humorously addressed concerns of nepotism, stating, “She got the job all by herself because she knows me inside and out.”
Arlene expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to honour her husband’s legacy and thanked the audience for their support.
Reflecting on his long career, Van Dyke shared his advice for the next generation: “You have to stick with it.
You’re going to go through hard times, but you have to stay with it. If you have confidence, believe that you can do it.”
A Record-Breaking Year for Van Dyke
This Emmy win marks Van Dyke’s second major accolade this year.
In June, he became the oldest Daytime Emmy winner for his guest performance on Days of Our Lives.
Reflecting on his incredible journey of 75 years in the industry, Van Dyke humbly said, “I don’t believe this.”
The 98-year-old icon hopes to be remembered for his infectious laughter and ability to spread joy, a legacy he has created for generations to come.
