J.K. Simmons recently shared insights on his 28-year marriage. Speaking at the NYC premiere of his holiday film, Red One, Simmons emphasised advice that’s simple yet powerful: “Be nice. Be on the nice list. And listen.”
Simmons, starring as Santa Claus in Red One, reflected on listening as essential for a strong marriage. He admitted that listening is a lifelong skill. “None of us do that all the time,” he admitted. “But try to listen. Try to listen.”
Meeting Michelle Schumacher: From On-Stage Chemistry to Lasting Love
Simmons and Schumacher first met in 1991 while working on Peter Pan. Schumacher, a dancer in the show, quickly caught Simmons’ eye.
“I saw this beautiful, petite blonde,” he recalled with a smile. Trying to impress her, he went to her dressing room—but left in a stumble. “I squealed like a 4-year-old,” he joked, “but she still found me attractive.”
Schumacher later revealed she, too, was smitten. “She had said, ‘Oh, who’s that?’” Simmons recalled with a laugh. This mutual attraction blossomed into a marriage filled with respect and humour.
Finding Success Through Support and Growth
Married since 1996, the couple has built a life in Hollywood. Together, they balance their careers and two children, Joe, 25, and Olivia, 22.
Simmons credits their success to kindness and growth. Supporting each other’s careers has strengthened their bond. Furthermore, a shared sense of humour keeps things fun.
Simmons has learned that listening is essential. “Listening isn’t always easy,” he admits, “but it’s a skill that helps any relationship.” Through every season, they stay committed to this approach, which has served them well.
Marriage Advice From Santa Claus Himself
Simmons’ advice is simple: “Be nice and listen.” These two principles are central to his marriage. After nearly three decades, he credits their bond to these basics. “Just try to listen—it makes all the difference,” he says.
His starring role as Santa this season makes his advice timely. His marriage philosophy is much like the holiday spirit: warm, joyful, and rooted in kindness.
