To attract lower-income customers McDonald’s extended its $5 value meal into December.
Around 80% of local markets choose to continue the deal into December after Franchisees have voted to extend the deal. The voting process is ongoing and additional locations might be added in the weeks.
“We’re Committed To Keeping Our Prices As Affordable”
The value meal offers varieties including a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, small fries, four-piece chicken nuggets, and a small soft drink for Just $5.
The company said owners will offer local promotions in the coming weeks and months with the value bundles. Moreover, it will also be available in McDonald’s app.
“Together with our franchisees, we’re committed to keeping our prices as affordable as possible, which is why we’re doubling down with even more ways to save,” McDonald’s U.S. President Joe Erlinger said in a statement, reported by NBC News.
This summer, the restaurant industry focused on value with companies such as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Starbucks offering discounts to attract customers. Diners have reduced their restaurant spending following the ongoing inflation.
Trying To Regain Customers
In July after McDonald’s reported declining second-quarter same-store sales, executives told restaurant operators and analysts the company will now emphasize how to regain customers through the deals as they will be extending the $5 value meal. The offer, initially running for four weeks in June and July, continued through August after 93% of restaurants agreed to keep it on the menu.
In a memo to the U.S. system gained by CNBC after the July earnings report, Erlinger stated that in the recent quarter McDonald’s faced difficulty in selling dinners on affordability and added that he wants “industry and competitive challenges” to go on throughout the year.
“Reversing the narrative and re-establishing our position as the leader on value and affordability is possible, but it cannot be done overnight. It will happen through sustained and coordinated actions that show the customer we’re on their side,” he wrote, reported by NBC News.
Erlinger said in the July memo that a $5 meal performed well among customers with lower incomes.
